A workflow is more than a sequence of tool calls. It connects a purpose, a changing context and the decisions needed to move work forward.

Start with the outcome

Define what a completed task looks like before deciding how an agent should approach it. Clear boundaries help distinguish meaningful progress from activity that produces more work.

Carry the right context

Each step needs enough information to be useful. Keep the task, relevant evidence and current state accessible, while leaving room to discard information that no longer contributes to the outcome.

Design the handoff

A handoff should explain what has happened, what remains uncertain and what needs a decision. The person receiving it should be able to continue without rebuilding the entire history.

Recover with clarity

Tools can fail and assumptions can change. A workflow should make its current state visible and offer a clear way to retry, revise or stop before continuing.
